Flood Cleanup and Indoor Air Quality

While heavy rainfalls recharge our groundwater resources, they also flood many homes. Flooding stimulates the growth of mold, mildew and spores in homes. People are sensitive or allergic to mold and spores and may experience headaches, chronic sinus infections or even asthma attacks.

The first consideration in flood cleanup is safety. Turn off the power or unplug any appliances in the flooded area to prevent electrical shock. Next, salvage furniture. Mattresses and furniture cushions that are soaked should be discarded, as drying will not occur quickly enough before mold and mildew begin to grow. Wash and dry wooden furniture away from humid areas.

Clean walls and floors with hot soapy water. Rinse and sanitize the area with a bleach water solution (1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water) to kill all mold and mildew spores. Extract water from carpet. Clean and dry it. Run a dehumidifier to speed drying.

If walls have been saturated, remove a portion of the drywall or plaster to assess the damage. The studs, drywall, and insulation may have been saturated and mold can grow and flourish. When saturated wall sections have been removed, the wood beneath should be sanitized with the bleach water solution and allowed to completely dry before any repair. Use new insulation and drywall to reconstruct the damaged area.
