Preventing Teen Drinking
Although it is illegal in all 50 states for anyone under 21 to buy
alcohol, it is still the "drug
of choice" for today=s
youth. Drinking begins earlier than ever before. The earlier youth start
using alcohol, the more likely they are to experience problems with
drugs later in life. In addition to alcohol, youth continue to use
tobacco, marijuana and cocaine at alarming rates.
Activities which may help prevent earlier use are:
- Become involved with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
- Send letters to the editors of newspapers, newsletters or
magazines to stress the importance of helping children avoid
underage drinking, binge drinking or driving drunk.
- Plan a program to promote "Drug-Free
Homecoming Weekend(s).@
- Become involved with a PTA/PTO or another group to host an event
such as a merchandise exchange. It offers students a chance to
exchange hats, shirts or other items with alcohol or tobacco slogans
for designs that discourage alcohol and tobacco use.
- Work with local colleges/universities to prohibit advertising on
school property for bar specials such as "happy
hour," or two-for-one
nights.
- Support "Hands Off
Halloween" by asking
retailers and bar owners not to exploit Halloween with
alcohol promotions.
