Be Aware of Date Rape Drugs

Slipping a "micky" into someone’s drink is not a new concept. Both men and women have fallen victim to these drugs for years. Today the 90’s versions of the drugs, often called "date rape drugs," are widely used on unsuspecting victims. Three of the most powerful "date rape drugs" used are Rohypnol (Roofies), GHB (Liquid X), and Ketamine (Special K). Most of these drugs are slipped into the victim’s drink (alcoholic or not). They are odorless, tasteless and undetectable. The effects of these drugs are more severe when mixed with other illegal drugs (e.g. marijuana, cocaine) or alcohol. Symptoms can include dizziness, drowsiness, amnesia, blurred vision, an intoxicated appearance, breathing difficulty and even death. Due to the amnesia effect of these drugs, victims find it difficult to resist and remember what has happened. When heading out for a social event, use the following suggestions to protect yourself.

  • Never go alone.
  • Never accept a drink from anyone.
  • Don’t share or exchange drinks.
  • Don’t leave drinks unattended.
  • Avoid taking drinks from open containers, such as punch bowls.
  • If distracted by conversation, keep your hand over your drink.
  • If feeling severely intoxicated after having a few or no alcoholic drinks, get help.
  • Never leave with someone you have just met.
  • Be alert to strange behavior of friends.
  • If you suspect you have been drugged, have a friend take you to a hospital. If possible, bring a sample of your drink for analysis.
