WINTER SURVIVAL CHECKLIST
A little preparation can help keep you safe during a winter storm.
At Home...
Keep on hand:
- non-perishable food
- manual can opener
- bottled water
- adequate supply of prescription medicines
- candles and matches
- flashlight with extra batteries
- battery operated radio and clock
Keep sidewalks and steps clear and use salt or sand to prevent slips
and falls.Wear layers of clothing when going outside instead of one very
thick layer.
If you lose power, keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to
prevent spoilage. Do not put food outside as it may attract stray
animals or become contaminated.
When traveling...
Prepare an emergency kit for your car. Keep it in your trunk. The
emergency kit should include:
- blankets
- waterproof matches and candles
- extra clothing, including boots and gloves or mittens
- small steel shovel, bag of sand or salt (in case you get stuck)
- pre-packaged foods such as raisins, nuts and candy
- a cup to melt snow in to drink
- flashlight with spare batteries and emergency flares
If a severe storm is forecasted, don't
travel. Keep your gas tank at least half full. Winterize your car - get a
tune-up and make sure your tires are in good shape. Keep your windows
clear, inside and out so you can see other motorists and pedestrians.
If you become stranded, don't
panic and don't leave your car.
If you're stuck for a long
period of time, run your engine and heater no more than ten minutes every
hour. Leave a window cracked for ventilation. Also, check to see that the
exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow.
