African American Male

Without Heart Disease Project

The Genesee County Health Department and local barber shops announce the kick-off of "Healthy Inside, Handsome Outside!", a program during June 2001 to reduce the risk of heart disease among men, primarily African American men, in Genesee County.

As men get older they are at an increased risk for developing heart disease. African American men have higher rates of cardiovascular disease than men of other races.

Participating barber shops will provide reading materials, and discussion about how to reduce risk while relaxing with the other men at the barber shop. Participants will receive incentives, a chance to win prizes, and, most importantly, valuable health information.

Participating shops include: Salon De’Excellence, Clints, Top of the Hill, Raymond Charles, Oasis Styling Center, and Reid’s Barbershop. For more information, call the Genesee County Health Department at (810) 785-5263.
