RE: Healthy Start Grant

The Genesee County Health Department (GCHD), in partnership with Faith Access to Community Economic Development (FACED), Flint Family Road, Genesys Health System, Hurley Medical Center, Mott Children’s Health Center, and the University of Michigan-Flint, has been awarded a $3 million Healthy Start Grant to help eliminate disparities in perinatal health services for African-American families in Genesee County. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded the grant for a four year period to reduce African American infant mortality rates and the incidence of low birth weights in three zip code areas having the highest infant mortality rates in Genesee County.

African-American mothers and infants in 48503, 48504, and 48458 zip codes will be able to receive case management and care coordination services designed to increase access to medical and other health services.

Fifth and eighth grade students from Flint and Beecher schools will also receive prevention education and have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and serve as peer educators.

For more information about Healthy Start, contact the Genesee County Health Department at 341-5239.
