(Flint, Michigan) New walking clubs for this fall are being
formed through the Genesee County Health Department’s Community
Health Nursing Program.
Heart disease and stroke are major causes of death in Michigan
and Genesee County. Walking is a great way to reduce the risk of
heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The Michigan Behavioral Risk
Factor Survey indicated that 54.5% of the residents in Region 2
(which includes Genesee, Shiawasee and Lapeer Counties) lead a
sedentary lifestyle. Walking is low impact, social and fun. It is
estimated that 32% of Michigan adults are overweight. Walking can
energize, reduce stress and assist in weight loss.
Joining a walking club is a great step toward improved health.
Members of walking clubs make a commitment to walk three times a
week for ten weeks.
