Better Life Through Better Health

The Healthy African American Men Project

(Flint, Michigan) The Genesee County Health Department along with local barber shops and fitness centers would like to invite all Genesee County men to participate in the Healthy African American Men program. The program is scheduled to take place September 9th – 13th and is aimed at increasing the knowledge of prostate cancer among men, primarily African American men in Genesee County.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men other than skin cancer. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death among men. It is important to know that prostate cancer occurs almost 70% more often in African American men then it does in European American men. African American men are also twice as likely to die from prostate cancer as European American men. It is estimated that 30,200 men in the United States will die of prostate cancer this year alone.

Learn more about prostate cancer. Participants will receive incentives and a chance to win a prize. You will also be given the opportunity to have a FREE blood test that helps detect prostate cancer.

Participating barbershops and fitness centers include Kings and Queens, Cut Above, Kingdom Covenant Cuts, The Source Fitness Center and The Rock Fitness Center.
