Breast

Awareness
January is
Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
Cervical cancer is preventable and
almost no one should die from
cervical cancer.
Every year in
Michigan 400 women are diagnosed
with cervical cancer and more than
100 Michigan women die each year
from cervical cancer. Genesee County
has one of the highest cervical
cancer mortality rates in Michigan.
Experts believe that most cervical
cancer deaths could be prevented by
safe sex practices, routine Pap
tests, and follow up of abnormal
results.
The Pap test
is the most commonly used method to
detect changes to the cells of the
cervix. Abnormal cells may be the
beginning of cervical cancer and can
be removed by a health care
provider.
Pap tests are
recommended yearly for women 18
years of age and older, and for
younger women who are sexually
active. After three consecutive
normal results, the test may be
performed every three years, at the
health care provider’s discretion.
Women may
obtain Pap tests through their
health care provider, local health
department and other community
clinics. Women 40 and older may be
eligible for free Pap smears and
follow up tests through the Genesee
County Breast and Cervical Cancer
Control Program (BCCCP). Women
diagnosed with cervical cancer or
precancerous conditions through the
BCCC Program may apply for Medicaid
to pay for needed treatment. To find
out if you qualify for free exams

and Cervical Cancer Control Program
