(Flint, Michigan) On October 30, 2002, at a
1:30 p.m. reception, the Genesee County Health Department will recognize
over 100 food service establishments for outstanding sanitation records,
healthy menus or smoke-free dining facilities. "I’d like to commend
these establishments for their outstanding work over the past year,"
reflects Robert Pestronk, Health Officer, Genesee County Health
Department. "Their attention to the health of their customers
reflects proudly on their management and staff." Media
representatives are encouraged to attend. The reception will be held at
the Genesee County Health Department.
This year marks the eighth annual presentation
of the "Excellence in Sanitation" awards. Sanitarians nominated
the most outstanding food service establishments in their inspection area
in each of twenty-two categories. The winner in each category was
determined by examining the two most recent routine inspections. First,
the establishments that had the fewest critical violations were
identified. From this select group, the establishment with the fewest non-critical
violations was selected for the award. Critical violations are those that
can lead directly to food-borne illness (e.g., food temperature, employee
hygiene, cross-contamination, etc). Examples of non-critical violations
include the cleanliness and condition of walls, floors, ceilings, plumbing
repair, etc.
The Healthy Lifestyle Award was added to the
Health Department’s presentation in 1999. Healthy Lifestyle Awards will
be given to food service establishments whose menus meet stringent
nutritional criteria.
The Genesee County Health Department along
with S.M.A.R.T. (Smoke-free Multi-Agency Resource Team) will recognize
food establishments that have committed to being 100% smoke-free. This
will be the fourth year that they will be publicly presented in
conjunction with other awards.
