National Health Survey

An overview of the most comprehensive study of the nation’s health status will be presented by Kathryn S. Porter, M.D., M.S., of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on Monday, June 21, 2004 , from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Conference Rooms #1-4 of the Genesee County Health Department, 630 S. Saginaw Street in Flint . Dr. Porter’s presentation, entitled, “An Overview of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey,” will highlight data collection methods, findings and applications. The presentation is open to the public. Please call 768-7970 by June 11 to reserve a seat.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, is a study of the health and nutritional status of all Americans. Nearly 400 Genesee County residents will participate in the NHANES through July 31, 2004 .  The NHANES visits 15 counties throughout the nation and surveys over 5,000 Americans each year. Participation in the survey involves first completing an in-home interview. Respondents then undergo medical and dental examinations in the NHANES Mobile Examination Center . The Center is located on the campus of the University of Michigan-Flint in the parking lot at Fifth Avenue and Saginaw Street .

Since the 1960’s, the NHANES has produced insights that have led to dramatic public health improvements. Information from the NHANES led to the elimination of lead in gasoline and paint resulting in more than a 70% decrease in the number of Americans with elevated blood lead levels since the 1970’s. More recently, the NHANES revealed that obesity and undiagnosed diabetes were on the rise, resulting in increased public awareness and efforts to address these health issues.

The presentation is sponsored by the Genesee County Health Department and the School of Health Professions and Studies at the University of Michigan-Flint.
