World AIDS Day - December 1, 2005
"Are You Aware?"

The Genesee County Health Department has partnered with the University of Michigan-Flint Urban Health & Wellness Center, YOUR Center, Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle Health Ministry and Woodside Church for this year’s World AIDS Day campaign.  Begun in 1988, World AIDS day was embraced collectively by 140 countries meeting at the World Summit of Ministers of Health on AIDS in London . The day was envisioned as an opportunity for governments, national AIDS programs, non-governmental and local organizations, as well as individuals everywhere, to demonstrate both the importance they attached to the fight against AIDS and their solidarity in this effort.

With a goal of reminding people that HIV has not gone away in Genesee County , and that there is much work still to be done, the local 2005 World AIDS Day campaign theme is “Are You Aware?”

·       Are You Aware that the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS estimates there were 37.2 million adults and 2.2 million children living with HIV at the end of 2004?

·       Are You Aware that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that at the end of 2003, 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with 24-27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection?

·       Are You Aware that as of October 1, 2005 , there are an estimated 16,200 persons living with HIV/AIDS in Michigan ?

·       Are You Aware that out of 83 counties reporting HIV/AIDS cases in Michigan , Genesee County is ranked number 4 outside of Wayne County/City of Detroit ?
