RE:  Smoke-free Genesee County Day, Monday, April 2, 2007

On March 27, 2007, the Genesee County Board of Commissioners signed a proclamation designating Monday, April 2, 2007, as Smoke-free Genesee County Day in honor of National Public Health Week.  Smoke-free Genesee County Day is a cooperative effort between the County of Genesee, Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) and the Smoke-free, Multi-Agency, Resource Team (SMART), to raise community awareness of the dangerous health effects of smoking and secondhand smoke.

According to the recent U.S. Surgeon General’s Report, there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke; even breathing a little poses a risk to health.  On Smoke-free Genesee County Day, local restaurants are encouraged to go 100% smoke-free for the day.  Smokers prepared to quit are encouraged to use April 2, 2007 as a quit date and smokers not yet ready to quit are encouraged to protect their children, friends and family members by not exposing them to secondhand smoke.  Free Smoker’s Quit Kits, local stop smoking resources and secondhand smoke information are available by contacting Ann Goldon at the GCHD.

Attached please find a list of restaurants participating in Smoke-free Genesee County Day.  To access a complete listing of smoke-free restaurants in Genesee County visit www.gchd.us and click on Smoke-free Dining Guide.
