Teens Celebrate the Great American Smoke Out
Thursday, November 15, 2007
is the 31st Annual Great American Smoke Out.
The Great American Smoke Out is designated as a day for individuals to
quit smoking, and for advocates to promote and encourage smoke-free
environments.
On November 14, 2007, at
6:30p.m., the Genesee High School Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) group will
celebrate the Great American Smoke Out at Ms. Smitty’s Diner, located at
7282 N. Genesee Road
in
Genesee
. The youth will show their support
for smoke-free environments by providing Ms. Smitty’s Diner with an award of
recognition for providing a 100% smoke-free dining environment.
According to the recent U.S.
Surgeon General’s Report, there is no risk-free level of exposure to
secondhand smoke; even breathing a little poses a risk to health.
The report also concluded that smoke-free
policies are the only effective way to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure in
the workplace. “I prefer dining in
a smoke-free restaurant,” stated TATU youth Erica Stearns.
“The smoke-out is the perfect time to show Ms. Smitty’s Diner our
appreciation, and to raise community awareness of the dangers of secondhand
smoke.”
The Genesee TATU group was
formed through a collaborative effort between
Genesee
High School
and the Genesee County Health Department (GCHD).
GCHD recently received a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to
train Genesee and
Lake
Fenton
students in the Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) program.
TATU is an American Lung Association program that teaches youth how to
become tobacco-free advocates in their community.
