RE:  Bendle Public School District Recognized as Hometown Health Hero

On March 29, 2006 , Bendle Public School District was recognized by Michigan Surgeon General, Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom, as a Hometown Health Hero during a kick-off event for public health week.  Bendle was acknowledged for implementation of a 24/7 tobacco free schools policy.  Their 24/7 tobacco free school policy prohibits tobacco use on school property at all times and at all school sponsored events.  The Bendle Public School District has made the health of their students and community members a priority.

Ninety percent of all adult smokers begin while in their teens.  Implementation of a 24/7 tobacco free school policy can prevent youth tobacco use and encourage youth and adult smokers to quit.  The policy provides a healthy environment for students, staff and visitors, while sending a clear, consistent message to youth that smoking is not acceptable.  For more information on implementing a smoke-free policy in your school or for technical assistance creating a 100% smoke-free policy, please contact Ann Goldon at (810) 341-5898 .
