What projects is SMART currently working on?

Smoke-Free Parks and Beaches

Parks are established to promote healthy activities. community wellness, and recreation.  According to Repace Associates, secondhand smoke levels in outdoor public places can reach levels as high as those found in indoor facilities where smoking is permitted.  SMART is working with the Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) and the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) to increase smoke-free recreation areas in Genesee County.

Smoke-Free Affordable Housing

SMART is working in collaboration with the GCHD, MDCH and the Smoke-Free Environments Law Project (SFELP) to educate landlords regarding the benefits of smoke-free apartment buildings and their right to adopt smoke-free policies. This initiative is in response to complaints from tenants over the years about secondhand smoke seeping into their apartments. Studies have shown that up to 65% of air within a building is shared within the units.

In March 2010 SMART received a grant from the Federal American Recovery & Reinvestment Act to provide free technical assistance to local landlords of affordable housing that are interested in going smoke-free.  For more information on smoke-free housing please visit http://www.mismokefreeapartment.org. The website has two major sections, one targeted to landlords and one to tenants, and also has a state-wide list of smoke-free apartments.  For assistance with going smoke-free contact Ann Goldon at (810) 341-5898.
